Brief History of the Department

 

The history of the Department lies with the erstwhile Tribal Development Department, which used to handle all matters related to Tribal Affairs, Minorities, Other Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes. During 1998-99, the Department of Minorities, and Other Backward Classes (MOBC) was bifurcated from the Tribal Development Department. In 2015-16, Scheduled Castes matters were then transferred to the Department of MOBC forming the Department of MOBC & SC. The Department of Other Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes (OBC & SC), Government of Manipur was then bifurcated from the erstwhile Department of Minorities, Other Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes (MOBC & SC), Manipur on 18th May, 2018.

The main objective for the establishment of Department of Other Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes, Government of Manipur is to take up measures to protect the interests of the OBC & SC communities of the State socially, economically & educationally and to take up various welfare programmes/schemes so that they come at par with the advanced sections of the society.

The following 2 (two) Grants-in-Aid bodies were also established under this Department:

  1. Minorities and OBC Economic Development Societies (MOBEDS), Manipur, &
  2. Manipur State Commission for OBC.
